Meigum Gaburichew Soft Candy Cola

Cola is the flavour that suits a long chew best.

The drink is a construction of citrus and warm spices under the caramel, and those notes unfold at different rates — in a soft candy you work through for several minutes, they arrive in sequence rather than all at once.

Where the ramune version is bright and gone, cola settles in.

It is also the Gaburichew that needs least explaining outside Japan.

Grape here means Kyoho and ramune means a festival drink most people have never had; cola is cola anywhere.

For a shop selling Japanese sweets abroad, that makes this the sensible entry point to a brand built on an unfamiliar texture.

And the texture is the brand.

Gaburi is the sound of a committed bite, and each stick is thick enough to demand one — dense and resistant, then yielding, sitting between taffy and chewing gum.

Meiji Chewing Gum has made Gaburichew since the 1980s, selling it singly for a few tens of yen in dagashi shops, with a character on the wrapper that changes regularly.

Each stick is a standard 12 g.
