Meiji Kaju Gummy Candy Unshiu Mikan Mandarin Orange

Kaju Gummy Mikan uses aragoshi juice — coarsely strained rather than clarified, so some of the fruit’s pulp stays in it.

That is the decision that shapes the whole product.

A clear juice gives a clean flavour and nothing else; a coarse-strained one carries body, and in a gummy that means the mandarin reads as fruit you have eaten rather than fruit you have drunk.

Meiji blends several concentrates to balance the acidity against the sweetness.

Unshū mikan is the mandarin Japan is built around.

It is the satsuma — the seedless, easy-peeling citrus that originated in Kagoshima some four hundred years ago and spread worldwide under the name of the province it came from.

In Japan it is winter itself: households buy them by the cardboard box, keep them under the kotatsu table and work through them all season.

Any Japanese person tasting this knows exactly what it is reaching for.

As with the rest of the Kaju Gummy range, the bag carries kajū 100 — one hundred percent juice by fresh-fruit equivalent — and no colouring at all.

The orange is the mandarin.

The chew is softer than the al dente style that dominates the Japanese gummy aisle; Meiji frames this as a gummy for unwinding rather than for stimulation.

54 g to a bag, with 2,500 mg of collagen.
