Kaju Gummy Pear is the range’s limited edition, and the fruit choice is a deliberate step upmarket.
Yōnashi means Western pear — in Japan the word distinguishes European varieties like La France from nashi, the round, crisp Asian pear that is a different fruit entirely.
Western pear is the one Japanese patisseries poach in syrup and bake into tarts, and it is valued here for exactly what Meiji is after: a mellow, rounded sweetness and a perfume the company calls jōhin de sensai, refined and delicate.
The juice is concentrated six-point-two times and used at roughly 7.6 g a bag, which reconstitutes to the full weight of the product — that is what kajū 100 means on the front of the pack.
As with the rest of the range, there is no colouring in the ingredient list at all.
Meiji grades its gummies on a published chewiness chart, and this one sits at level two: soft, clean-breaking, releasing the juice quickly rather than resisting the teeth.
The company positions that level explicitly for unwinding.
The packaging is pitched upmarket to match the fruit, and the format is a 47 g bag rather than the 54 g of the standard flavours. Available for a limited period only.
