Mitsubishi Kamu Kamu Lemon Chewy Candy

Kamu kamu means “chew chew,” and the name is a set of instructions.

This little bag is one of Japan’s definitive sour candies, built around the idea that a single piece should change as your teeth work through it.

The engineering is a proprietary three-layer structure, and each layer has an assigned job.

The soft outer coating opens sweet. Beneath it, a crisp outer body breaks with a light saku texture and delivers the first wave of sourness.

At the center sits a smooth, properly chewy core where the sour lemon settles in for the long haul.

Sweet, then sharp, then chewy and bright — a small narrative arc in every piece, which is precisely why one is rarely enough.

The lemon itself is Setouchi lemon juice, from the sun-soaked islands of Japan’s Inland Sea — the country’s premier lemon country, where Hiroshima and Ehime groves produce fruit fragrant enough to have become a regional brand in its own right.

Each piece also carries the vitamin C of ten lemons, by the maker’s official count, which has long made this a desk-drawer and commuter-bag staple in Japan: the candy people reach for when the afternoon needs resetting.

The maker is an unexpected one.

Mitsubishi Shokuhin is not a confectioner but one of Japan’s largest food distributors, part of the Mitsubishi group.

And Kamu Kamu is its beloved original creation — successful enough to have spawned a whole family of flavors, from ramune to Shine Muscat, and even its own official holiday: September 6, a Japanese number pun on “kamu,” is registered as Kamu Kamu Lemon Day.

Puckeringly sour, quietly clever, and endlessly re-purchasable — this is Japanese refreshment candy in its classic form.
