Umai-Chew is the umami-forward variant of Morinaga’s Hi-Chew lineup — “umai” (うまい) carrying the double meaning of “delicious” and “skillful” in Japanese, a name that signals a flavor more savory and complex than the straightforward fruit sweetness of the standard Hi-Chew.
The Green Apple version is the one that demonstrates what that means in practice.
Green apple — ao ringo in Japanese — has a specific flavor character that distinguishes it sharply from red apple: brighter, more tart, with a fresh, slightly vegetal quality that sits closer to the skin of the fruit than to the flesh.
It is a flavor that is immediately recognizable in Japanese candy culture, where green apple has been one of the most popular fruit flavors for decades.
The Umai-Chew version uses concentrated apple juice to build that flavor, backed by safflower yellow and gardenia blue coloring that produces the characteristic vivid green associated with the variety.
Like Suppai-Chew, Umai-Chew uses the kari-juwa format: an outer layer that gives a brief, crisp texture before dissolving into the soft, juicy chew underneath — a different experience from the uniformly soft texture of standard Hi-Chew Grape or Strawberry.
The green apple’s natural tartness is present from the first bite, building through the chew rather than fading.
Allergen-free apart from apple and gelatin, and manufactured on shared equipment with milk products. Twelve pieces per pack, 20 kcal each.
