Moonlight is a Morinaga biscuit that has been on Japanese shelves since 1971, and it is defined by one thing: egg.
Where most butter biscuits lead with dairy, Moonlight is built on a rich egg-yolk flavour and a texture the Japanese call saku-horo — a crisp first bite that immediately crumbles rather than snapping cleanly.
The pale gold colour comes from the yolk itself.
It is a quiet, old-fashioned biscuit that several generations here have grown up with, and Morinaga has spent fifty years not changing it.
This is that flavour rebuilt as a galette sandwich.
A galette in the French sense is a thin, flat, buttery biscuit, and Morinaga uses two of them here with a cream between — a larger, more substantial format than the original Moonlight round, and a richer one.
Butter, whole milk powder and buttermilk powder go into the recipe alongside the egg and dried egg yolk, so the dairy that Moonlight traditionally keeps in the background comes forward.
The saku-horo texture survives the change of shape: it still collapses rather than breaks.
Each piece is 26 g and 130 kcal, individually wrapped, six to a box — a size Japanese households buy for the cupboard and take out with coffee or black tea in the afternoon.
Morinaga released this version in March 2026.
Worth noting the storage requirement is 26°C, which is lower than the 28°C most Japanese confectionery specifies.
