Baby Star Ramen has been in production since 1959, which makes it one of the oldest snacks in Japan still selling in anything like its original form.
The idea behind it has never changed: instant noodles, fried and pre-seasoned, eaten dry straight from the bag.
Chicken is the flavour it launched with and the one it is still best known for — a savoury, roasted poultry seasoning that Oyatsu Company describes as filling the mouth.
The texture is what the brand is built on.
The noodles are fine, thin strands rather than the wide cut of the Dodekai range, and they break with a pari-pori crackle — a dry, light, slightly brittle snap that comes from frying thin noodles rather than thick ones.
A bag is mostly air and noodle, which is why a 21 g packet goes further than the weight suggests.
This is the mini size, pitched at a single sitting.
Oyatsu Company adds calcium, and the packs carry the Red Cup Campaign mark: a portion of sales goes through the Japan Association for the World Food Programme to fund school meals for children in food-insecure regions. 21 g, 102 kcal.
