Otsumami means something eaten with a drink, and that is what this box is assembled for.
Three different Sanko Seika products go in — eight individual packs in total — chosen so that no two have the same texture.
The company’s own description runs through them as sounds: sakutto, poritto, garitto. Crisp, brittle, hard.
Kaki no Tane is the rice cracker most associated with beer in Japan: small curved slivers, soy-glazed and chilli-hot, traditionally served with peanuts mixed in, and this version is seasoned with bonito dashi.
Tsubuyori Komochi is the opposite end — small puffed rice cakes in a mayonnaise-and-seaweed seasoning, light rather than dense.
Mama no Ichioshi is a fried cracker mix with peanuts, chicken extract, garlic and black pepper, the heaviest of the three.
Sanko Seika is a Niigata company and one of Japan’s largest rice-cracker makers.
Three packs of Kaki no Tane, two of Tsubuyori Komochi and three of Mama no Ichioshi, 157 g in total, each individually wrapped.
