Tohato Caramel Corn Puff Snacks

Caramel Corn has been made by Tohato since 1971, and in 2026 it turns 55 — which puts it in the small category of Japanese snack foods that have outlasted the generation that first bought them and are now being purchased by their grandchildren.

The formula has been refined several times, but the concept has never shifted: a sweet corn puff snack in a country where salt was the default, positioned as something different and unusual, and backed by a jingle that people who heard it in childhood still remember.

The snack is built around three elements that Tohato describes as the three secrets of its flavor.

The corn puff base — made from corn grits mixed with water, then expanded under heat and pressure using a proprietary technique — is what gives each piece its characteristic texture: light and airy at first contact, dissolving quickly rather than requiring any real chewing.

Tohato’s specific approach to managing heat and pressure during expansion produces a melt-in-the-mouth quality that is more pronounced than in most corn puff snacks of this type.

The caramel syrup coating is Tohato’s own formulation — sweet enough to be the defining flavor of the piece, with a clean finish that dissipates before the next piece rather than lingering and accumulating.

This is a deliberate calibration: the syrup is designed to let you keep eating without the sweetness becoming oppressive.

The addition of caramel paste in 2015, and honey in 1995, added depth to what was originally a simpler coating.

The roasted peanuts at the bottom of the bag are the counterpoint.

Salted, skin-on, and present in enough quantity to appear regularly as you eat through the bag, they provide the savory note that keeps the sweetness in check and give each handful a slightly different character from the last.
