Chocolat Caramel Corn is the limited-edition version of Tohato’s classic that replaces the caramel coating entirely, dressing the same airy corn puff in cocoa instead.
The name uses the French-derived “shokora” rather than the plain Japanese word for chocolate, and the distinction is deliberate.
In Japanese food culture, shokora signals something closer to patisserie — a richer, more adult cocoa flavor — and Tohato builds that impression with two ingredients: genuine cacao mass, and a small addition of cinnamon.
The cacao mass gives the coating a deeper, more bitter-edged cocoa character than a simple chocolate-flavored powder would.
The cinnamon arrives only at the finish, a soft warmth after the cocoa fades rather than a spice note you would identify on first bite.
Reviewers consistently describe the overall effect as closer to a sweet, well-made cocoa than to a candy bar — chocolatey up front, gently spiced at the end, and easy to keep eating.
The corn puff base is unchanged: the same fluffy, crisp texture that dissolves on the tongue, which Japanese fans describe as “juwatto” — that melting moment Tohato has refined over five decades.
The pairing works particularly well here, because the cocoa seems to bloom across the palate exactly as each puff disappears.
As with other seasonal Caramel Corn flavors, this is a limited-time release.
Where the Salty version answers the question of what happens when the salt moves into the coating, the Chocolat version answers a different one: what Caramel Corn tastes like when it stops being caramel at all.
