Royal Milk Tea Thunder is built on a blend of two black teas, which is unusual precision for a snack bar.
Assam and Uva go in at 50% each — Assam from northeast India for malty body and strength, Uva from the highlands of Sri Lanka for a sharper, more floral aroma.
The combination is what gives the bar its hanayaka character, bright and aromatic rather than simply tea-flavoured.
Royal milk tea is a Japanese invention despite the English name.
Tea leaves are simmered directly in milk rather than brewed in water and topped up, which extracts more tannin and body and produces a drink far richer than a Western cup of tea with milk.
It has been a fixture of Japanese cafés and vending machines since the 1960s, and reproducing it in a chocolate bar means matching that richness — which Yuraku does with Hokkaido milk chocolate.
The Thunder bar itself is the brand’s architecture: a layered cocoa biscuit, crushed and compacted, coated in chocolate, with almonds worked through for a zakuzaku crunch.
Yuraku Seika launched Black Thunder in 1994, and the format now carries dozens of flavours. 20 g a bar, 110 kcal.
