Elise has been in Bourbon’s lineup since 1979 — a slender, stick-shaped cream wafer that has quietly outlasted trends and format changes while staying almost exactly as it was at launch.
The Hokkaido Milk version is the one that consolidated into a standalone bag product, for people who always reached for the white cream side of the original mixed box first.
The construction is deceptively simple: thin wafer sheets sandwiching a milk cream filling, formed into a 9cm stick and individually wrapped two at a time.
The wafer is the kind of light, barely-there crisp that gives way immediately without the snap of a harder biscuit — a background texture whose job is to frame the cream rather than compete with it.
The current version uses Hokkaido-grown wheat flour for the wafer itself, adding a faint nuttiness to the grain that wasn’t part of the original formulation.
The cream is where the Hokkaido designation matters most. Whey powder, whole milk powder, and skimmed milk powder are all sourced from Hokkaido — Japan’s primary dairy-producing prefecture, where the climate and pasture conditions produce milk with a particularly clean, full flavor.
Dried egg yolk is worked into the filling alongside them, adding a quiet richness that reviewers sometimes describe as condensed-milk-adjacent without tipping into sweetness that overwhelms.
The result is a cream that is genuinely milky rather than simply sweet — mellow, rounded, and with enough depth to make each piece worth slowing down for.
39 kcal per two-piece pack. Sixteen pieces in eight individually wrapped portions — the kind of bag that disappears at a rate that consistently surprises people.
