Calbee Crisp Potato Chips Beef Consomme

Crisp is Calbee’s other potato chip — and the difference is the entire point.

Where a standard chip is a slice of raw potato fried whole, Crisp is a molded chip: dried potatoes mashed into flakes, pressed into uniform ovals, and fried into a dense, even wafer with the loud, satisfying zaku’ crunch that only the molded format produces.

Same potato, different physics.

The brand has quietly become one of Calbee’s most interesting engineering stories.

Launched in 2016 as a canister chip, it moved to bag packaging in 2024 — cutting packaging weight by roughly 80% — and the switch had a delicious side effect: chips no longer needed to be stacked in alignment, so Calbee redesigned the seasoning process itself.

The result is remarkably even flavor coverage, seasoned edge to edge, built to hold through the aftertaste.

Since late 2025, each bag has also carried a small game: rare star-shaped chips mixed in at random, with the cheerful promise that finding one grants a wish.

Beef Consomme, released in April 2026, is the first-ever renewal of the brand’s consomme flavor.

Consomme is sacred ground in Japanese chip culture — the French bouillon, adopted decades ago into home kitchens as a stock cube, became the country’s defining savory chip seasoning.

The previous version balanced meat and vegetable umami evenly; this renewal deliberately tips the scales, raising the beef umami and spice so the richness stands up to the potato and lingers to the last chew.

Even the package signals the shift, its bands recolored a meaty brown.

A thick-crunching, evenly seasoned, wish-granting chip wearing Japan’s favorite flavor with the beef turned up — an easy bag to recommend and a hard one to close.
