Nori shio — seaweed and salt — is one of the most enduring flavor profiles in Japanese snack culture, appearing across potato chips, rice crackers, and corn puffs in countless variations.
The Kappa Ebisen version adds a third element that elevates the combination considerably: sesame oil, applied as a powdered form that distributes through the seasoning and releases its fragrance as you eat rather than sitting on the surface as a coating.
The nori component here is not a single seaweed but two: aonori — the bright green powdered seaweed with a clean, grassy oceanic fragrance — and yakitori (roasted nori), which is darker, drier, and more intensely savory than the unroasted variety.
The two types bring different qualities to the seasoning: aonori for freshness and color, roasted nori for depth and umami, together producing a more complete seaweed flavor than either would achieve alone.
The sesame oil powder is the distinguishing element.
Sesame oil is one of the most immediately recognizable aromatics in Japanese and East Asian cooking — a fragrance that arrives before the flavor and persists after it, warm and nutty in a way that rounds the saltiness of the nori and the natural sweetness of the shrimp underneath.
Applied as a powder rather than a liquid, it integrates into the seasoning without making the chip feel oily, maintaining the same crisp, non-fried texture as the standard Kappa Ebisen.
A summer-season limited release, available until late July 2026.
