Coris Awa Soda Bubble Ramune Candy

Awa Soda does something a candy has no business doing: it foams.

Awa means bubbles, and the moment a piece hits your tongue it starts generating them — a fizzing, expanding reaction that fills the mouth and keeps going for several seconds.

Coris describes it as the sensation of a carbonated drink, which is accurate as far as it goes, though a drink does not do this quite so energetically. The effect is the product.

The mechanism is the same one behind every ramune tablet, pushed much further.

Japanese ramune candy is pressed from glucose with an acid and a carbonate worked in, and when saliva dissolves the two they react and release carbon dioxide.

Most ramune does this gently, as a faint prickle.

Awa Soda does it in volume, which is why the packaging shows a character being engulfed by his own mouthful.

The flavour underneath is fruity soda — the clear blue-tinted soft drink taste that Japan treats as a category of its own, bright and sharp rather than tied to any one fruit.

Three pieces to a pack, 24 kcal in total, and the whole thing is designed to be tipped straight into the mouth.

Coris has been making dagashi in Osaka since 1948 and is the company behind Fue Ramune, the whistle candy.
