Lotte Ghana Matcha Chocolate

Ghana Matcha Chocolate is built on a white chocolate base, which is the decision that shapes everything else.

Whole milk powder sits first on the ingredient list and there is no cacao mass at all — only cocoa butter — so there is no cocoa flavour competing with the tea.

Matcha against milk chocolate is a fight; matcha against white chocolate is a partnership, and it is why most serious matcha chocolates in Japan are made this way.

The matcha is Uji, from Kyoto Prefecture, and it goes in as a paste rather than a powder.

Uji has been Japan’s benchmark tea region since the Muromachi period, and what distinguishes its matcha is a balance of umami and astringency that cheaper grades lack — the bitterness is there, but it reads as depth rather than as harshness.

Lotte has increased the matcha content in the current formulation, which the packaging announces as matcha-kan UP.

Ghana has been Lotte’s flagship chocolate brand since 1964, named for the origin of its cacao, and this is the matcha entry in a range otherwise built on milk, black and white.

The colour comes from gardenia and safflower rather than synthetic dye. 45 g to a box.
