Bourbon Hitokuchi Lumonde Chocolate Crepe Bites

Hitokuchi means one bite, and this product exists to solve a specific problem.

Regular Lumonde is a long stick of layered crepe that shatters when you bite it, which is most of its charm and all of its inconvenience — crumbs on the desk, crumbs on the shirt.

Bourbon’s answer was to shrink the roll to bite size and coat it in chocolate.

Nothing falls. Nothing sticks to your fingers. You can eat these at a keyboard.

The texture changes with the format.

Where the full-size Lumonde flakes apart delicately, Hitokuchi Lumonde packs the crepe layers tighter and Bourbon describes the result as zakuzaku — a coarser, more emphatic crunch that gives way and then dissolves.

The chocolate around the outside is real chocolate rather than cocoa cream, made with cacao mass, cocoa butter and butter, which makes this the more chocolate-forward of the two.

The crepe still comes through underneath, toasted and faintly biscuity.

Sold loose in a 47 g bag rather than individually wrapped, so this is the pocket and desk-drawer format.

Coffee is the obvious pairing.

The Lumonde name has been on Japanese shelves since 1974, and this is the version built for eating on the move.
