Funwari Meijin Kinako Mochi dissolves rather than crumbles.
Echigo Seika puffs 100% Japanese glutinous rice into something so light that it collapses the instant it meets the tongue — fuwatto, as the Japanese description has it — and the kinako coating is left behind as the puff disappears.
That sensation is the entire product, and it is unlike any Western snack texture: closer to candy floss in behaviour than to a rice cracker, but tasting of toasted soybean and mochi.
Kinako is roasted soybean flour, and it is one of the foundational flavours of Japanese confectionery — dusted over warabimochi, rolled onto dango, stirred into milk.
Echigo Seika uses Hokkaido soybeans for theirs, which gives a deeper, nuttier roast than ordinary kinako, and sweetens the whole thing with wasanbon: the fine-grained sugar produced in Shikoku by a labour-intensive traditional method, prized in Japanese sweets for a delicate sweetness that disappears cleanly.
Seven ingredients in total, and nothing resembling an additive among them.
Echigo Seika is a Niigata company, founded in 1947 in Japan’s rice country, and it works across mochi, packaged rice and rice confectionery — the Funwari Meijin line is where the mochi-making expertise goes into a snack.
The 75 g bag holds individually wrapped portions of roughly 18.8 g each. Green tea is the obvious partner, and this is a sweet that genuinely needs one.
