The Family Pack version of Pretz Umami Salad is not simply the same product in a larger box.

Glico developed the 8-bag format using two technologies that are specific to this version and absent from the standard 64g box.

The first is what Glico calls “texture control technology” — a baking technique developed over decades of confectionery research that increases the crispiness and melt-through quality of each stick simultaneously.

The result is a pretzel that is more immediately crisp on first bite than the standard version, while dissolving more cleanly rather than leaving a dense, starchy residue.

The two qualities — crispness and melt — are usually in tension in a baked product; the texture control method achieves both at once, which is why the 8-bag version tends to earn separate mention from reviewers who have eaten both formats.

The second is the micronization of the seasoning powder.

The same aromatic bouillon, sake lees, consommé seasoning, and flavor oil that define the Umami Salad flavor are ground into finer particles in the 8-bag format, which changes two things: the flavor distributes more evenly across each stick’s surface, and the powder no longer transfers to the fingers during handling — a practical improvement for the kind of snacking that happens while working, reading, or doing anything else at the same time.
