The Hitotsumami Shrimp Curry Mini Pack is the peanut-free version of Iwatsuka’s curry cracker, in a single 30 g bag.
Without peanuts breaking up the bite, the texture runs uninterrupted — kari-kari on the outside giving way to zaku-zaku within, crisp shell over something coarser and more fragmented.
Seven spices go in, blended in-house, and Iwatsuka names most of them on the panel: turmeric, chilli, cumin, cardamom, nutmeg, bay, black pepper.
That is an unusually transparent declaration for a supermarket rice cracker, and the target is spice curry — the style that has swept Osaka and Tokyo over the past decade, where whole spices lead and the heat is aromatic rather than thick.
Shrimp runs underneath in three forms: shrimp powder, a shrimp extract seasoning and shrimp itself, giving a marine savouriness that sits with the spices more naturally than it sounds.
Hitotsumami means a pinch, the amount taken between finger and thumb.
Iwatsuka Seika has worked with nothing but rice since 1954 from its base in Niigata, Japan’s rice country, and its stated principle is that good senbei begins with good rice — the company runs its own farming operation on that basis.
At 30 g this is one bag for one sitting.
There is real heat here; Iwatsuka warns on the pack that anyone sensitive to spice should approach with care.
