Koikeya Pure Potato Chips Beef & Cheese

Pure Potato Beef & Cheese is Koikeya’s safest bet in a premium line that usually takes risks.

The rest of the range runs to sriracha, tom-yum-adjacent spice blends and a ketchup chip; this one is beef and aged cheddar, a pairing that needs no explaining in any market.

Koikeya’s own word for it is uma-kaku — a coined phrase meaning you are certain it will taste good before you have even opened the bag.

The flavour is built on richness rather than complexity.

Beef brings the savoury depth, cheddar the salt and the lactic tang, and between them there is enough fat and umami that the seasoning would overwhelm an ordinary chip.

That is where the Pure Potato construction earns its place: 100% Japanese-grown potatoes sliced noticeably thicker than standard and fried so each piece breaks with a dry sakutto snap.

More potato per chip means more to balance against.

Koikeya produced Japan’s first mass-market bagged chips in 1962, and Pure Potato is the line where the company argues for the raw material rather than the seasoning — non-GMO, domestic, cut thick enough that the potato stays audible.

Beef & Cheese arrived on 28 September 2026 in convenience stores and reached wider distribution on 5 October. 52 g to a bag.
