Amaou is the strawberry Japan takes most seriously. Developed in Fukuoka over years of breeding and released in 2005, it is large, deep crimson all the way through, and balanced between sweetness and acidity in a way that made it the benchmark premium strawberry almost immediately. The name is an acronym of four Japanese words — round, tasty, big, delicious — and it commands a price to match. Lotte puts it into this chocolate at 3.5% by raw weight, alongside 3.4% framboise, and states both figures on the front of the box.

That pairing is doing something specific. Amaou brings the deep, rounded sweetness of a ripe strawberry; framboise — raspberry, in the French register Japanese patisserie uses — brings a sharper, brighter acidity that keeps the whole thing from settling into jam. Against the aerated chocolate the berries read clean and fresh rather than heavy, and the colour comes from gardenia and safflower rather than synthetic dye. Whole milk powder sits second on the ingredient list, so the base remains dairy-forward, with the fruit running through it.

Ghana has been Lotte’s flagship chocolate brand since 1964, named for the origin of its cacao, and Premium Ghana is the upper tier of the range. Lotte’s framing is jibun wo motenasu, hosting yourself — a small daily reward rather than a gift. Each piece is 7.1 g and 41 kcal. A seasonal edition, made for spring and summer.
