Suppai-Chew is the sour variant of Morinaga’s Hi-Chew lineup — “suppai” (すっぱい) being the Japanese word for sour, which tells you exactly what to expect before the first piece is unwrapped.
Where standard Hi-Chew delivers fruit flavor in a soft, uniformly chewy format, Suppai-Chew adds an outer layer of sour powder that produces what Morinaga describes as “kari-juwa” — a crisp initial sensation that gives way immediately to the juicy chew underneath.
The lemon flavor is built on concentrated lemon juice alongside citric acid at 41mg per piece — a meaningful amount that delivers a genuine sourness rather than a mild citrus flavoring.
Vitamin C is added at 8.4–22mg per piece, which is partly functional and partly a reflection of the lemon’s natural composition.
The tartness arrives immediately at the outer layer, amplified by the powdered coating, then continues through the chew as the concentrated juice releases.
It is a more aggressive flavor profile than the standard Hi-Chew Grape or Strawberry, calibrated specifically for people who find those versions too restrained.
No milk ingredients — unlike the Strawberry version, which uses lactic acid bacteria beverage.
The allergen profile here is gelatin only, making it the most broadly accessible of the three Hi-Chew varieties in this lineup.
Twelve pieces per pack, 20 kcal each.
The one for people who want their candy to actually be sour.
